A Celebration of Studio Ghibli: Sudbury Indie Cinema Film Festival Exceeds Funding Goal

Studio Ghibli fans in Sudbury have reason to rejoice as a grassroots effort to celebrate the beloved animation studio’s work comes to life. The “A Celebration of Studio Ghibli” film festival, funded through a successful INDIEGOGO campaign, is set to take place on September 15-16-17, 2023. What’s even more exciting is that this local-driven initiative has surpassed its initial funding goal of $5,000, ensuring that the festival will be a resounding success.
Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, is renowned for its enchanting and imaginative films that have captivated audiences of all ages. With classics such as “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Spirited Away,” and “Princess Mononoke,” the studio has left an indelible mark on the world of animation and storytelling. In honor of the studio’s rich legacy, local businesses and passionate fans have united to organize this unique film festival.
The INDIEGOGO campaign, launched by Sudbury Indie Cinema, aimed to raise $5,000 to cover the costs of running the festival, including licensing fees, and other essential expenses. To their delight and the joy of fans in Sudbury, the campaign exceeded expectations, reaching a total of $6,013 in funding as of September 12.
“We are blown away by the support we received,” mentions an update by the festival’s organizers. “The funds will allow us to enhance the festival experience and provide more perks for attendees. It’s a testament to the love and passion people in Sudbury have for Studio Ghibli.”
A variety of local businesses and passionate individuals contributed to the campaign including title sponsor Northern Gaming Events and Linda Cartier of Financial Decisions Inc. who both contributed 1000$ to fund the event.
The three-day festival promises to be a treat for Studio Ghibli fans, featuring screenings of iconic films, food, crafts, vendors, and more. Attendees can immerse themselves in the enchanting worlds created by Miyazaki and his team while connecting with like-minded fans who share their passion.
One of the highlights of the festival will be a screening of “Spirited Away” on opening night sponsored by Comics North Hidden Level Games. Guests are encouraged to come enjoy film-inspired food prepared by Kako’s Kitchen and indulge in the magic of Ghibli in the heart of their city.
Tickets for the festival are still available, and organizers are anticipating a high turnout of Studio Ghibli devotees eager to immerse themselves in the whimsical and imaginative worlds created by the legendary animation studio.
